This Friday April 22 we will be kicking off the Rocktown Beer and Music Festival by having Brooklyn Brewery’s owner Steve Hindy hosting a special Brooklyn Brewery beer tasting and a book signing for his book ” Beer School: Bottling Success at the Brooklyn Brewery” from 5-7pm. We will be tasting the following beers:

PILSNER
Brooklyn Pilsner is traditionally brewed from the finest European two-row barley malts. German-grown Pearle and Hallertauer hops provide a crisp, snappy bitterness and fresh, floral aroma. Brooklyn Pilsner is fermented at cool temperatures and then given a long, gentle maturation (lagering), which results in a beer of superior complexity and smoothness.

SUMMER ALE
Brooklyn Summer Ale is brewed from premium English barley malt, which gives this light-bodied golden beer a fresh bready flavor. German and American hops lend a light crisp bitterness and a citrus/floral aroma, resulting in a beer with a very sunny disposition

EAST INDIA PALE ALE
A deep golden beer brewed from British malt of a blend of hps featuring the choice of East Kent Golding variety. It is traditionally dry-hopped for a bright aroma of hops, lemongrass, pine and citrus fruit and has a robust bitterness, a warming malt palate and a clean hoppy finish.

BROOKLYN LOCAL 1
In Williamsburg, Brooklyn, we forge barley malt and hops from Germany, aromatic raw sugar from Mauritius and yeast from Belgium into our latest beer. Behind the full golden color you’ll find an alluring aroma, a dynamic complex of flavors, Belgian flair, Brooklyn fortitude and a dusting of our special yeast. To create this beer Brooklyn Brewery uses the old technique of 100% bottle refermentation, a practice now rare even in Europe. It gives this beer a palate of unusual depth.

BROOKLYN LOCAL 2
Brooklyn Local 2 is a combination of European malts and hops, Belgian dark sugar, and raw wildflower honey from a New York family farm. The special Belgian yeast adds hints of spice to the dark fruit, caramel, and chocolate flavors. After 100% bottle refermentation, the beer reveals a marvelous dry complexity, enjoyable by itself or at the dinner table.

Then on Saturday April 23 please come and join us at the Rocktown Beer and Music Festival from 2:30-8:00pm in the Turner Pavilion. Tickets are available for purchase at the following website: http://www.rocktownfestival.com/

All proceeds from the event will go the the Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance.

With beer tastings and music, it is shaping up to be a great weekend! We look forward to seeing you!

Jean Reverdy et Fils
Sancerre Blanc (2009)- France $19.99

This is 100% single vineyard Sauvignon Blanc from the mineral-laden soil of the Sancerre district within the Loire Valley. Very lean and focused with floral and citrus aromas and a bit of chalky minerality. The palate is exceptionally lively, zesty, and fresh with a precise acidity that lingers on through the finish. Pure and elegant, perfect with fish dishes, and salads that include goat cheese!

La Monacesca
Verdicchio di Matelica (2007) – Italy $24.99

Full-on Italian white with viscosity, weight, and acidity! Honeyed pear and floral aromas and flavors and just enough stony minerality. An amazing texture, this wine has a bit of girth, but also a bracing acidity that lends structure and prevents the wine from being flabby and falling off balance. This Verdicchio also manages to exhibit elegance through the persistent finish — try it with scallops and risotto! Yum!

G.D. Vajra
Langhe Barolo Rosso (2008) – Italy $13.99

This wine hails from the Langhe hills in the heart of Barolo, a world-famous wine growing region of the Italian Piedmont. Primarily Nebbiolo, this wine also includes Barbera, Dolcetto, and Pinot Noir. It is absolutely delicious and pairs with everything from pasta, pizza, braised beef, and sausages, to fresh tomato bruschetta. It’s often a good idea to choose a wine which represents the least expensive offerings from estates which produce expensive and sought-after wines; they treat the lower priced options with the same care and respect. Giuseppe Vajra reflects this notion and says that Vajra Rosso is their family’s house red and it’s the wine they most often open when they sit down to eat!

Ravaille Freres
Ermitage du Pic Saint Loup (2008) – France $19.99

From the soil of Pic St. Loup in the Coteaux du Languedoc appellation of Southern France, comes this delicious blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre. Black fruit on the nose with a touch of anise, spice, and graphite. Dense and concentrated on the palate where these dark and brooding characteristics pick up an exotic smoky/meaty character that combines with a savory herbal note. Delicious!

“The 2009 Semillon, (a grape variety rarely seen in Argentina), was sourced from 60-year-old ungrafted vines with 15% of the wine aged in new American oak and bottled without fining or filtration. Light gold in color, it exhibits an alluring perfume of melon, bee’s wax, baking spices, and spring flowers. Dry and smooth textured with a sense of elegance, this nicely balanced, lengthy effort will provide pleasure for another 4-5 years.”
